Has the time come to invest in a new truck? The market’s home to multiple high-profile brands, but you know you can always rely on Ford. This leading manufacturer has remained so popular for so long with good reason, but actually choosing a single truck from their extensive model lineup to suit your personal and professional demands can be quite a challenge.

Aside from the different models (offering diverse engines, towing capacity, and features), Ford’s line of trucks presents you with another challenging option: RegularCab, SuperCab, or Super CrewCab. To help you pick the right one, let’s take a look at the differences between Ford’s three cabs.

Seating Capacity
Seating is a key consideration with any pickup truck. The Ford Regular Cab accommodates up to three people, though two may be the more comfortable option. This cab is ideal if you normally drive the truck alone or with one passenger with you.

If you’re expecting to have more than two passengers, the Ford SuperCab can seat as many as six people. As with the Regular Cab, filling the cab to capacity might lead to mild discomfort, though having that maximum available as an option can certainly be a huge benefit.

The SuperCrew Cab must be much bigger, right? Well, while you might expect it to seat up to 8, its maximum seating stays at six. However, as there’s more room inside overall (which we’ll get to later) passengers can enjoy greater comfort. If you tend to drive solo or with one passenger only, the Regular Cab should be fine. Go for the Super Cab if you have between four and six passengers on a regular basis, and the Super Crew Cab for hauling items along with people.

Doors
The Ford Regular Cab truck has just two doors, which is all you need for this smaller cab, and allows safe, secure access for one or two passengers. The Super Cab features four doors, but the back pair are rear-hinged to open in the opposite manner as the front doors. This makes getting to the backseat far easier, which is especially helpful if you’re hauling heavy goods in the rear seating area. It not only enables you to get the cargo in and out much easier, it also means passengers can get into and out of the back seats with ease as well.

However, these rear doors can only be opened using hidden handles, and these stay inaccessible while the front doors are shut. For anyone to exit the back of the cab, the front doors will have to be opened. While this isn’t usually a big problem, but it is a slight inconvenience that makes a basic function more cumbersome than it should be. The Super Crew Cab has four doors, all opening in the same standard direction. The cab’s extra space makes entering and exiting simple, though.

Internal Volume
The Regular Cab has 64.6 cubic feet of space inside, with 40.8 inches of head room in the front, as well as 43.9 for your legs. The SuperCab has 116 cubic feet inside, which is a huge leap from the Regular Cab. In the front, your head room remains the same as with the Regular Cab. Passengers in the back of the Super Cab can relax with 40.3 inches of head room, and 33.5 inches of space to stretch their legs. The Super Crew Cab steps things up with a generous 131.8 cubic feet of space, enabling you to carry passengers as well as a few items. The cab’s front features are the same dimensions as the Super Cab’s. In the back of the cab, your passengers have the same head room available as with the Super Cab, but their legs now have more than 10 extra inches to stretch, taking it up to over 43 inches.

You have to give your passengers’ comfort and mobility real consideration before buying a truck. If you tend to offer rides once in a while, you could go for a Regular Cab or SuperCab, but for daily journeys, the SuperCrew Cab could be your best option. Particularly if you are carrying both passengers and baggage on a regular basis

Towing Capacity
Your truck’s towing capacity may or may not be a huge factor in your decision. If you use yours for work in which towing other vehicles or a trailer is vital, then you’ll need to go for the cab offering the highest capacity – and it’s no real surprise to see the SuperCrew takes that title. The Regular Cab and SuperCab share a towing capacity of 15,000 pounds, which is more than the weight of one SUV, or two mid-sized cars. The Super Crew Cab can tow as much as 21,000 pounds, which is equivalent to around two SUV’s.

Payload Capacity
A truck’s payload capacity refers to the amount it can carry in its cab and in the bed. The Ford Regular Cab itself can accommodate up to 3,930 pounds safely. The Super Cab can take just 3,710 pounds, while the Super Crew carries a maximum of 5,320.

Availability
The different cabs are available on various trim levels. For example, the Regular Cab is available with the XL and XLT trims, but not the King Ranch, Lariat, Raptor, Platinum, or Limited. The SuperCab is available with the XL, XLT, and Lariat, but not the King Ranch, Raptor, Platinum, or Limited. The Super Crew is available with the XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, and others dependent on the model chosen.

As you can see, each type of cab has its own advantages and disadvantages. The important thing is to focus on which you really need to perform your work or live your life, rather than going for the one you simply think looks better. If you drive a truck through rough terrain but carry few passengers or cargo, a Regular Cab could be ideal. For taking multiple passengers and carrying heavy loads together, the SuperCrew Cab is probably your best bet. Meanwhile, the SuperCab is perfect if you’re somewhere in the middle.
